Let us know why any business related to this timber has been declared a 'ban' in India. The main reason for this is that this wood has reached a point where it did not take long to become extinct. Numerous international organizations have already identified the tree from which the wood is made as 'endangered' or 'endangered'. Only 5% of the world's sandalwood trees are alive. This tree does not grow in any other country of the world except India nor does it grow in any other state of India except Andhra Pradesh. This tree does not grow in all the districts of Andhra Pradesh. Nellore, Kurnool, Chittor and Kadapa - these are the only four districts in Andhra Pradesh where these trees grow in remote mountainous areas. It is clear with open eyes that the supply of this tree is very low. According to the general principles of economics, if the supply of a product falls short of the demand, its price goes up. Due to which the price of wood of this tree is much higher than other woods. The price of a tonne of sandalwood in the world market is Rs. 10 million to 15 million!
As timber trade is prohibited, timber is smuggled illegally to meet demand in the world market. Illegal traders cut down forest trees through local tribesmen, and cut them to size. They are then hidden in various local warehouses. The locals can collect this sandal wood and earn much more than they earn by cultivating sugarcane locally. After collecting firewood from the hills and cutting them to size, waiting for an opportunity, security guards can then cross the border by truck. After receiving the consignments, illegal traders from across the border rescued them from the security guards on the other side and sent them to different parts of the country. The local government of Andhra Pradesh is aware of this, which often conducts various raids in the forest to catch carpenters who are present to cut down trees. More than 30 carpenters and more than half a dozen security guards have been killed in the past decade. There are allegations that local carpenters attacked security guards with hammers, knives, sticks, etc. during the operation. Human rights groups, on the other hand, claim that security forces often carry out attacks on unarmed locals, which is against human rights.
If we talk about one of the countries where the demand for sandalwood is highest, then the name of China will definitely come up. From time immemorial, the Chinese elite has been in great demand for this rare wooden instrument and furniture. At present most of the sandalwood smuggled from India goes to Nepal and then to China. Several Chinese nationals have been arrested from India's border areas over the past decade for alleged involvement in the illicit trade in sandalwood. In China, remnants of furniture and musical instruments, first made from this wood, are sent to pharmaceutical factories.
Despite repeated raids by the local administration, it is not possible to stop the smuggling of timber. There have been countless deaths over the past decade, thousands of tons of timber seized, but smuggling has not stopped. Smugglers hide behind the responsibility of collecting firewood from local tribesmen in mountainous areas, security guards never find them. Maybe the day will come soon when these trees will not be found in the mountains. At the same time, about 3,000 people involved in various activities such as cutting down trees, collecting them, transporting them by truck, etc., have to choose another profession.
